Local knowledge
Peacehaven is a town of 15,436 people in 6,796 households at the 2021 census, on the A259 above the chalk cliffs about six miles east of Brighton. It has grown steadily — 13,217 in 2001, 14,067 in 2011.
It is unlike anywhere else we cover because of how it was made. Charles Neville founded it in 1916, initially as New Anzac-on-Sea and renamed Peacehaven in February 1917, and laid it out on the American grid system: Roads running east-west, Avenues north-south, crossing the main road. Navigation is easy; the plots are what matter.
The early houses were plotland builds — makeshift homes put up from whatever was available, including old railway carriages and former army huts — with more substantial housing arriving later once water and electricity were in. That history means the stock varies enormously from plot to plot, and outbuildings, sheds and garages here often hold more than the house does.
Because so much of the work is garden, garage and outbuilding clearance rather than room clearance, an honest description of what is in them is what gets you an accurate quote. Access is generally good on the grid, but the seaward end is exposed and worth mentioning if the approach is unmade.
