Bags of garden waste and cut branches after a garden clear-up in Eastbourne

Quick answer

For regular grass and hedge cuttings the council garden waste bin is usually the cheapest route. For an overgrown garden, a one-off big load, or soil, turf and fencing the bin will not take, a private garden clearance in Eastbourne is more practical.

What the Eastbourne Council garden waste service costsSection titled What%20the%20Eastbourne%20Council%20garden%20waste%20service%20costs

Eastbourne Council runs a garden waste collection for households. We have not been able to confirm the current annual price, bin size, collection frequency, subscription dates or sign-up route from the council's own pages while writing this, so we have not quoted figures here that could be out of date.

Before you subscribe, check the garden waste pages on the Eastbourne Council website for the current price, any extra-bin charge, the subscription year and any pause over winter. Council prices and rules change, so recheck the official page before you book.

What can and cannot go in the garden waste binSection titled What%20can%20and%20cannot%20go%20in%20the%20garden%20waste%20bin

The council publishes its own list of what the garden waste bin accepts, and we would rather you read that than rely on a summary. As a general rule for any council garden waste service:

  • Grass cuttings, leaves, hedge trimmings and small prunings are the usual material.
  • Soil, rubble, turf, plastics and general household rubbish are normally not accepted.

Treat that as a guide only and confirm the detail, including any limit on branch size, on the Eastbourne Council website before filling the bin.

Taking garden waste to the tipSection titled Taking%20garden%20waste%20to%20the%20tip

Eastbourne is served by the Eastbourne household waste recycling site on St Philip's Avenue, BN22 8NB, run by East Sussex County Council. The page lists green garden waste and Christmas trees as accepted items.

  • Booking: the county council says you must book in advance before you visit the tip. This has applied to all users since 24 November 2025.
  • Vans: vans are only allowed on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with limits on weight and van type. Cars are allowed at all tips.
  • Trailers and height: trailers are limited to 1.8 metres long (2.4 metres on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays), and the vehicle height limit is 2 metres.
  • Soil: soil is charged. The free allowance is up to two 50 litre bags a week, and each extra bag is charged.
  • Trade waste: no trade waste is permitted.

The county council's household waste recycling sites page has the booking link and the current opening hours. Rules and charges can change, so check it before you travel.

When the council bin is enoughSection titled When%20the%20council%20bin%20is%20enough

The council bin is a good fit when the garden is already under control and the work is routine:

  • Regular grass cuttings through the growing season.
  • Leaves and light hedge trimmings.
  • Small amounts of pruning that fit in the bin.
  • A household that is happy to do the cutting, bagging and wheeling out.

When a private clearance is the better optionSection titled When%20a%20private%20clearance%20is%20the%20better%20option

A private clearance is more practical when the job is bigger than a bin or involves materials a garden bin is unlikely to take:

  • An overgrown or neglected garden that needs cutting back first.
  • More waste than the bin holds, or a one-off clear-out.
  • Soil, turf, rubble or old fencing.
  • A house sale or tenancy deadline.
  • Nobody able to do the physical work, or no way to get a load to the tip.

More than the bin can take?

We clear overgrown gardens, green waste, soil and garden rubbish across Eastbourne, usually the same week.

Common questionsSection titled Common%20questions

Is the tip the free way to get rid of garden waste in Eastbourne?Section titled Is%20the%20tip%20the%20free%20way%20to%20get%20rid%20of%20garden%20waste%20in%20Eastbourne%3F

The county council's recycling sites page lists green garden waste as accepted and does not mark it as charged, whereas soil is labelled as chargeable. It does not state outright that garden waste is free, so check the booking and site rules before you go. You must book a slot first.

What if my garden waste will not fit in the bin?Section titled What%20if%20my%20garden%20waste%20will%20not%20fit%20in%20the%20bin%3F

We could not confirm the council's rule on extra bags or side waste, so check the garden waste pages on the Eastbourne Council website. Your other options are to take it to the Eastbourne recycling site in a booked slot, or to book a private garden clearance if the amount is large.

Can I take a one-off load of garden waste to the tip?Section titled Can%20I%20take%20a%20one-off%20load%20of%20garden%20waste%20to%20the%20tip%3F

Yes, as a household you can take green garden waste to the Eastbourne site, but you must book in advance. Vans are limited to Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and trade waste is not allowed. If you have no suitable vehicle, a private clearance collects it from your garden.
